Lately, we’ve been getting a lot of questions about professional headlines and profile statements. What are they? What’s the point? How can you write the best one for you? You asked and we answered:

What is a professional headline?

Popularized by LinkedIn, a professional headline is a short description about what you do, who you are, and where you want to go. Just like Superman is known as the “man of steel”, think of a professional headline as a summary of your professional self. Apart from LinkedIn, consider using your professional headline on other social media sites, your personal webpage, or even in your email signature.

What is a profile statement?

You’ve heard of an objective statement, so think of a profile statement as a new, enhanced version. Instead of writing about what you want in a position, a profile statement focuses on your qualifications in terms of the company’s needs and values.

How can I write the best professional headline or profile statement?

Update often. Your profile statement should be different for every company you apply to while your professional headline can be updated as you change your focus and goals.

Use dynamic, active language. You want to inspire potential employers, clients, and networking contacts to want to read more about you, right? Pick strong words that define you rather than “fluff”.

Add numbers. The best way to convince someone you are as good at something as you claim to be is to give him or her as much context as possible. Often, that means adding numbers. Money saved, deals closed, calls managed, budgets handled – find a meaningful number and put it up front and center.
