What jobs can you get with your major? More than you think, and less automatically than you fear. A major does not map to one job. It creates a set of plausible starting points, and where you land inside that set depends on skills, internships, geography, further education, and the evidence you can show an employer. Government data backs this up: the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that 39.4 percent of employed recent graduates work in jobs that typically do not require a degree, while Census data shows earnings varying widely even among graduates of the same major. This guide maps 15 major families to their realistic career families and shows how to turn any major into hireable evidence.
Short answer: What careers can you pursue with your major?
Short answer: Every major feeds a family of careers, not a single job. Your major shapes your starting options; internships, demonstrable skills, location, and (for some fields) graduate school or licensing shape where you actually land. Employers hire evidence: projects, work experience, and outcomes. Treat the sections below as maps of plausible paths, not guarantees, because no degree guarantees a specific job or salary.
Why don’t majors map neatly to jobs?
Three reasons, all visible in the data.
Most jobs are not major-locked. Outside regulated professional roles, few jobs formally require a specific major. Employers screen for capability plus evidence, which is our observation from resume data rather than a government statistic.
Underemployment is common across majors. The New York Fed defines underemployment as a college graduate working a job that typically does not require a college degree. Among employed recent graduates (bachelor’s holders aged 22 to 27), 39.4 percent were underemployed in the 2024 data released in February 2026. The spread by major is wide: nursing sat near 12.8 percent while many liberal arts fields ran far above the average.
Outcomes diverge within majors. The Census Bureau’s Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes data shows earnings varying widely by institution and field even for the same major, and a February 2026 Census working paper (“College Majors and Earnings Growth” by Choi, Kinsler, Orellana, and Pavan) found that engineering and computer science majors see earnings growth “comparable to or faster than” other majors over the career. Translation: the major is one input among several, and its effects play out over decades, not just at the first job.
None of this means the major is irrelevant. It means the major is a starting map, and you still have to do the traveling.
College majors and common career families

Business
Common careers: financial analysis, accounting, marketing, sales, operations, human resources, supply chain, general management tracks. Transferable skills: financial literacy, spreadsheets and reporting, project coordination, communication with stakeholders. May need more school: CPA licensure for public accounting (exam plus credit-hour requirements), MBA for some management and finance tracks. Misconception to avoid: that “business” means managing people on day one; early roles are analytical and operational. Resume evidence: an internship with a measurable contribution, a case competition result, or a spreadsheet model or process improvement with numbers attached.
Engineering
Common careers: design, test, manufacturing, and process engineering across civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and related specialties; project engineering; technical sales. Transferable skills: quantitative modeling, CAD and simulation tools, structured problem solving, documentation. May need more school: the Professional Engineer license (required to sign off on many civil and public-facing projects) requires an exam sequence and supervised experience; research roles often want graduate degrees. Biology and life sciences
Common careers: laboratory technician, research assistant, quality control in pharma and biotech, regulatory affairs, science sales, public health support roles. Transferable skills: lab technique, experimental design, data collection and analysis, scientific writing. May need more school: medicine, dentistry, veterinary, pharmacy, and physician assistant paths all require professional school; independent research careers generally require a PhD. Misconception to avoid: that a biology bachelor’s by itself leads to being “a scientist”; most bench careers ladder through technician roles or graduate school. May need more school: actuarial credentials come from professional exams rather than graduate school; academic and senior research roles want a PhD. Misconception to avoid: that the options are teaching or academia; math graduates also work across industry and government roles. Misconception to avoid: that a physics or chemistry bachelor’s translates directly into a “physicist” or “chemist” title; the bachelor’s-level market is mostly technician and analyst work. Social sciences
Common careers: policy analysis, market research, program coordination at nonprofits and agencies, data-informed roles in government, user research support. Communications
Common careers: public relations, corporate communications, content marketing, social media management, journalism, event and brand coordination. Misconception to avoid: that communications is a generic fallback; it is a portfolio field, and graduates without published work compete poorly. Misconception to avoid: the barista meme; humanities graduates work across business, media, education, and government, but the path runs through demonstrated skills, and underemployment risk is real for graduates without them. Education
Common careers: classroom teaching, special education, instructional design, corporate training, education technology, school administration pathways. May need more school: teaching requires state licensure (usually built into the degree); administration typically requires a master’s. Misconception to avoid: that education majors can only teach; instructional design and corporate training hire the same skill set. Arts and design

May need more school: mostly no; specialized master’s programs exist but portfolios dominate hiring, while fine arts showed elevated unemployment (about 7.7 percent) in the 2024 data. Misconception to avoid: that art degrees lead nowhere; applied design roles are real, but they go to portfolios, not transcripts. Public policy and legal studies
Common careers: legislative and agency staff roles, policy research, compliance, paralegal work, advocacy and nonprofit operations. May need more school: practicing law requires a JD and bar admission; a legal studies bachelor’s does not make you a lawyer; many policy careers reward a master of public policy or administration. Misconception to avoid: that employers reject liberal arts graduates categorically; what employers reject is the absence of evidence, which broad majors must work harder to supply. Which careers require additional education or licensing?
A useful filter when comparing majors: some destinations are simply not reachable with a bachelor’s degree alone. Medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and physician assistant roles require professional school. Practicing law requires a JD and bar admission. Clinical psychology, counseling, and therapy require graduate degrees plus state licensure. Physical and occupational therapy are now graduate professions. Public school teaching requires state licensure. Engineering sign-off authority requires the PE license. University professorships require a PhD.
If your target career sits on this list, the major question becomes secondary to the admissions question: choose the major you can excel in while completing the prerequisites, because professional schools weigh grades and test scores heavily and mostly do not require specific majors.
What do employers evaluate besides the major?
For early-career hiring, the major mostly determines which doors you approach. What determines whether the door opens:
- Internships and work experience. One of the clearest signals, because it is evidence someone already paid you to do the work.
- Demonstrable skills. Tools, languages, methods, and certifications you can prove in an interview or a portfolio.
- Concrete outcomes. Numbers, artifacts, and results, even small ones from campus jobs or projects.
- Geography and flexibility. Markets differ sharply by city and by willingness to relocate.
- The resume itself. Screening is fast and unforgiving; a strong record presented badly performs like a weak record.

How do you turn coursework into resume evidence?
The early-career trap is a resume that lists courses instead of accomplishments. The fix is to translate: every course worth mentioning produced an artifact, a method, or a result.
- “Statistics coursework” becomes “Analyzed [dataset] using [method]; found [result].”
- A capstone becomes a project entry with a goal, constraints, your role, and the outcome.
- A group project becomes evidence of delivery: what shipped, by when, and what you owned.
- Lab courses become named techniques and instruments you can run without supervision.

This outcome is common, and it is a detour, not a verdict. With 39.4 percent of employed recent graduates underemployed in the 2024 New York Fed data, the relevant question is trajectory: is the job building skills, responsibility, or a network that points somewhere you want to go?
Practical moves: extract the transferable evidence the job generates (numbers, tools, responsibilities), keep one deliberate skill investment running on the side, and reframe your resume around the destination rather than the history. Career changers of every age do this; six months into a first job, you are simply doing it early.
How should you compare career options without chasing one salary number?
A single average salary hides almost everything that matters. Better practice, using free official sources:
- Check the distribution, not the average. The Census Bureau’s Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes data shows percentile earnings by major and institution, though it covers only partner institutions, so treat it as illustrative rather than complete.
- Check growth, not just the starting point. The February 2026 Census working paper found engineering and computer science earnings growth comparable to or faster than other fields over the lifecycle. First-job salaries understate long differences.
- Check both unemployment and underemployment. The New York Fed’s outcomes-by-major table shows fields with easy entry but weak degree-level placement, and vice versa.
- Check occupation projections. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook projects employment for 2024 to 2034 by occupation, which matters more than the major label.
- Weigh licensure time honestly. A path requiring six more years of school has a real cost that a salary table never shows.

Employers hire evidence of capability; they rarely audit the major behind it.
Do employers care what you majored in? For licensed fields, yes, decisively.
